What HCPC registration means

HCPC is an independent regulator set up by an Act of Parliament. It maintains a public register of health and care professionals who meet the standards required to practise safely and effectively in the UK. The register is publicly searchable. Anyone can look up whether a physiotherapist is currently registered.

When you apply as an internationally qualified physiotherapist, HCPC compares your training and qualifications against the standards that UK-trained physiotherapists are required to meet. They are not looking for a perfect match. They are looking for evidence that you have the knowledge, skills, and competence to practise safely at the level required in the UK.

This distinction matters because some applicants assume their Indian BPT or MPT will either be fully accepted or fully rejected. In reality, the outcome depends on what your specific programme included, how your clinical experience compares to UK expectations, and how well your documentation demonstrates these things.

Who this applies to

If you qualified as a physiotherapist outside the United Kingdom and you want to work as a physiotherapist here, you must apply through HCPC's international application route. This includes:

• BPT graduates from Indian universities seeking to practise in the UK
• MPT postgraduates with or without prior BPT registration in India
• Physiotherapists already registered with the Indian Association of Physiotherapists or a state council who are relocating to the UK
• UK residents who qualified abroad and have not yet registered with HCPC

The step-by-step application process

Step 1: Create an account and submit the online form

The application starts on the HCPC website. You create an online account and complete an application form covering your personal details, qualifications, employment history, and details of any previous registrations. This takes approximately 45 to 60 minutes to complete properly. Do not rush it. Errors at this stage can cause delays later.

Step 2: Pay the application fee

The non-refundable application fee of 533 GBP is paid online when you submit the form. HCPC will not begin reviewing your application until payment is confirmed. This fee covers the cost of assessing your application. It is not a guarantee of registration.

Step 3: Gather and send supporting documents

After submitting the online form, HCPC will write to you with a list of the specific documents they require. This list is based on the information you provided in your application. You then have a set period to submit these documents. Documents must be sent by post to HCPC's UK address. Some supporting documents can be submitted electronically. • Straightforward applications with complete, correct documents: 90 to 130 days
• Applications requiring additional documents or clarification: 130 to 200 days
• Applications requiring an adaptation period or additional assessment: 9 to 18 months from initial submission

The time needed to gather and authenticate documents before you even submit is typically four to eight weeks. Budget this into your planning, particularly if you need to contact your Indian university for official transcripts or a detailed syllabus document. Indian universities vary considerably in how quickly they respond to these requests.

Fees and costs to budget for

The fees you pay directly to HCPC are the most visible costs but not the only ones. Here is a realistic budget breakdown.

• HCPC application fee: 533 GBP (non-refundable)
• HCPC registration fee (if approved): 409 GBP for a two-year registration period
• Notarisation of documents: Typically 5 to 15 GBP per document if done in the UK, higher if done in India
• Certified translation: Typically 50 to 120 GBP per document depending on length and the translation service used

Total costs for a straightforward application typically fall between 1100 and 1400 GBP. Applications requiring translation of multiple documents can cost more.

The mistakes that cause rejection and delay

Sending uncertified copies of documents. Sending photocopies without proper notarisation is the single most common cause of delays. HCPC will ask you to resubmit, which adds weeks or months to the timeline.

Providing transcripts without clinical hours. HCPC needs to assess whether your clinical training meets UK standards. Transcripts that do not show clinical hours completed, or that show them only in aggregate without breakdown by setting, are often insufficient. Ask your university for the most detailed transcript they can provide.

Sending a letter of good standing that is more than three months old. Letters of good standing from professional bodies in India have a validity period. HCPC requires them to be current. If yours expires during the application process, you will need a fresh one.

Leaving the curriculum document until last. Some applicants submit everything quickly except the curriculum document because they underestimate how long it takes to get from an Indian university. Start requesting this as early as possible. If your university does not have a standard document, you may need to write to the registrar or programme director specifically requesting a formal curriculum letter. Not disclosing previous registrations or fitness-to-practise proceedings. HCPC takes honesty very seriously.
