Which professions require HCPC registration to practise in the UK?

The Health and Care Professions Council is the UK statutory regulator for 15 health and care professions. Using any of these protected titles without current HCPC registration is a criminal offence under the Health Professions Order 2001. Every NHS trust, private hospital, and healthcare agency requires proof of HCPC registration before they can employ you.

Our approval rate is 100% because we fix problems before you submit

Every HCPC rejection we have seen came down to three problems: clinical hours not broken down by area of practice, reference letters that did not meet the HCPC format, or a CPD log that listed courses without demonstrating reflective learning. We check all three before you submit a single document.

Vipul Jain, co-founder: "The HCPC does not reject applications because applicants are not qualified. They reject applications because the paperwork does not show it clearly. In every case we have supported, the professional had the clinical competence. The problem was always the evidence."

What the HCPC needs to see from internationally qualified applicants

The HCPC assesses whether your training and experience is broadly equivalent to UK-standard training for your profession. Missing or incorrectly formatted documents are the primary cause of delays and rejections.

Core documents for all professions

  • Degree certificate and official academic transcripts with certified English translation
  • Clinical placement evidence showing hours by area of practice (not an aggregate total)
  • Good standing certificate from your home country regulatory body
  • Two professional reference letters from supervisors who observed your clinical practice
  • Continuing professional development (CPD) log covering the past two years with reflective evidence
  • Passport copy and proof of current legal status

The three reasons applications fail

1
Clinical hours not broken down by area

Indian programmes issue aggregate hours certificates. The HCPC requires specialty-by-specialty breakdown. We provide templates for supervisors to complete.

2
Reference letters from the wrong person

Letters from HODs or professors who did not supervise clinical work directly are insufficient. We identify exactly who should write the letters and what they must say.

3
CPD log is a list, not a reflection

Listing courses without connecting them to changes in professional practice does not meet the HCPC standard. We review and help you rewrite CPD entries.

How HCPC registration works, step by step

1
Document audit (The Tutorment, before you pay the application fee)

Before you spend £533, we go through every document you plan to submit. We tell you exactly what is complete, what needs improvement, and what is missing. Most applicants find one or two documents that need work before they are ready to submit.

2
Create HCPC account and pay the application fee (£533)

Register at hcpc-uk.org and upload all documents through the online portal. The HCPC will acknowledge receipt and begin assessment once they confirm your application is complete.

3
Assessment period: 90 to 150 days

The HCPC assesses your training against their standards of proficiency for your profession. We support you through any requests for further evidence during this period. A well-prepared application rarely triggers additional requests.

4
Registration approved: pay the registration fee (£409 for 2 years)

You appear on the HCPC online register, which employers, patients, and agencies can check at any time. Registration lasts two years and requires renewal with ongoing CPD evidence.

Common questions about HCPC registration from India

Q
Do I need IELTS for HCPC registration?

The HCPC does not have a mandatory English language test as part of their registration process. However, most UK employers will require IELTS or OET, and your visa application may also require it. Application documents must be in English.

Q
Can I start the HCPC process before I have a UK job offer?

Yes, and you should. HCPC registration and UK employment are separate processes. Having HCPC registration in hand significantly strengthens job applications because employers do not have to wait for you to register before they can hire you.

Q
What happens if my HCPC application is rejected?

The HCPC writes to you explaining the specific reason. You can appeal or reapply after addressing the gaps. The application fee is not refunded. If rejected due to document issues rather than qualification equivalency, a corrected resubmission has a high success rate. We help clients through reapplications.

Q
Is the Indian Association of Physiotherapists (IAP) the correct body for the good standing certificate?

For physiotherapists who qualified and practised in India, yes. The IAP issues the certificate of good standing that the HCPC accepts. For other professions, the relevant Indian professional association or regulatory council issues the appropriate certificate. We can confirm the correct body for your profession.
